ESG Storytelling – Story #1

Whether it is CSR, Sustainability or ESG Storytelling, the biggest hurdle that most managers have is the ratio of text to visuals in their reports and communication materials. Often the photographs are group shots of people taken on a phone that only make sense if the text is read, however the image distracts the viewer/reader from the text and so the objective of the communication is compromised.

I want to share some ESG/CSR/Sustainability stories that I have created for clients.

This is a story about water in rural Africa and the difference it can make to personal hygiene and wellbeing when people have easy access to running water on tap, rather than boreholes that they have to travel to. The plumbing and pumps required to have local water on-tap are often funded by organisations as part of their ESG and CSR commitments.

For many people in rural Uganda water is a luxury and getting it involves travelling some distance to the nearest borehole and filling up plastic containers. Often the distance is several miles and the volume of water that can be carried is very limited.

Water is used for drinking, cooking, cleaning and washing – just like anywhere else in the world but first it has be collected.

With the installation of water pumps, powered by solar power, it is possible to pump water from the borehole to where it is needed, rather than the people travelling to where the water is. This is where companies are making a real impact with their CSR and ESG commitments – relatively small amounts of funding are literally improving the quality of lives.

Where taps are installed at convenient locations that avoid heavy lifting and carrying, personal health, hygiene and wellbeing is vastly improved, and communicable diseases can be avoided because a simple task like washing hands is made much easier.

Can I can help you with ESG storytelling?

I have over 25 years experience of visual storytelling. I started to help clients communicate sustainability strategies in the early 2000s and since then I have also studied at Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, so I’m very familiar with the issues and challenges.
