One smile

A couple of years ago I collaborated with Stonepillow, a homeless charity based in Chichester. Over several months I visited hubs, hostels, and recovery centres to document the work of the charity and their ‘clients’.

It was a great project that culminated in a fund raising exhibition that generated thousands of pounds in donations.

What’s really pleasing is to see those images still being used today. And one in particular keeps cropping up in my social media feeds.

This is Mo, I met him at a ‘hub’ that provides advice, laundry and shower facilities, and free lunches. He’d had a long career as a member of the household service to a wealthy family and when he retired he came very close to becoming homeless. Stonepillow continue to offer Mo advice when he receives incomprehensible communications from the housing association- which is quite often.

Since we met, Mo has become something of a star, appearing on the cover of reports, papers, recruitment ads, fundraising campaigns and more.

I think it’s because Mo represents hope and optimism, which you can see in his eyes and in his smile.
